Recently in the technology world, there has been a shift in web design. Designers now focus on making a site search engine friendly. (yes, Google. We will refrain from using too many Google examples. There are other search engines in the world!) With this shift comes a new type of web designer, a "Search Engine Optimization" designer. I will dive head first into the search engine, SEO companies, and what that means for consumers.
The Search Engine
We all know Google. It is everyone's miracle site. To some, it is the ultimate enemy. However you slice it, Google is becoming a giant company. Is it a scary thought that Google is some sort of Big Brother? I'm not really sure.
Back on topic. The search engine is a tool that goes on the web and aggregates text from websites. Most search engines use, what are called, "spiders" that "crawl" the Internet looking for text from websites. It goes back every few weeks to check for changes. It then has that in its memory and will pull it up when you search for something. It gathers information like when your text was last changed, how often you change it, what sort of ads are on there (sometimes) and most importantly it measures the quality of your text. Since millions (if not, billions) of people access the Internet, it is important to have QUALITY text and text that changes frequently. So the search engine could be your friend or your enemy, depending on your site.
SEO? What's that?
Like I said, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. So what does that mean? It means you pay someone to advise you on steps to making your site's text viewable by search engines. Search Engine Optimizers really only care about ratings, Google, and your ads. They are way too focused on your rank on Google. Why would you need that?

What?! No Flash?!
Yes. No flash! This makes some people shutter and go away from our site. Some people think that flash is the only way. Well, ITS NOT! (What exciting news!) What a designer can do (if they even know how... SEOs most likely wouldn't) is use JavaScript. JavaScript doesn't require anything for someone's browser, like Flash does. In fact, you probably use JavaScript everyday and you don't know it! If you have a standard browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, AOL, or Safari, you probably have JavaScript enabled (unless you knowingly disabled it). It does the same sorts of things flash can do without a clunky download.
